Middle School Math & Science Teacher position

Abiqua Academy, the only independent (non-sectarian) PreK – 12 college preparatory school between Eugene and Portland, Oregon, seeks a full-time Middle School Math and Science teacher, commencing academic year 2020-21. We anticipate the likely need to “toggle” back and forth between in-person instruction at our spacious South Salem campus, and distance learning, combining virtual classes and online assignments via Google classroom. Whether in person or remote, Abiqua teachers engage and inspire young people. When possible, we strive to emphasize experiential, hands-on learning opportunities. HEART values: Honor, Empathy, Accountability, Respect, and Teamwork, are reinforced within and beyond the classroom. In addition to teaching 4 or 5 classes, the FT teacher collaborates with colleagues to support student academic and social-emotional development. Positive relationships characterize the school community.

Science: As are English and Social Studies classes, Science classes are blended 5th and 6th grade level groups of approximately 12 – 15 students per class. Topics are structured around themes that rotate on a two-year cycle. During 2020-21, the focus will be Physical Science; the following year, Life Science.

Math: Abiqua adheres to the CPM (College Preparatory Mathematics) philosophy that emphasizes mathematical problem-solving and reasoning endorsed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This position will focus on younger students but the flexibility to teach other levels is advantageous. Professional development and support available.

Qualifications:

Bachelor or Master of Education degree, with emphasis in Science, Mathematics or another STEM field

Two or more years teaching experience preferred

Oregon teacher license desired

Ability to pass background check

Demonstrated ability to interact positively and professionally with colleagues, students and parents

Commitment to HEART values and ability to engage and inspire students

Compensation based on qualifications and experience. Benefits provided.
